Faith For Real #3: Are You Real Saved?

I am so excited about this Tuesday's Lesson. It will be a real faith check for our youth. The format for the Sr. High at Midway will be similar for the jr. high.
I will force myself to only teach 15 minutes. I am planning on getting some weights and having a lifting competition. We see who can bench the most pounds or do the most reps. The point will be that when you work out you make your muscles stronger and if you never ever take steps of faith... your faith will remain weak.

The two points of the small group discussion will be focussed on helping youth find out if their faith is real or dead and if their faith is real... is it growing?

A KEY COMPONENT OF TOMORROW WILL BE PROMOTING THE MISSION TRIPS! Sunday is the last day to sign up for the Brazil and Red Lake Mission Trip. Please... in your small group... emphasize how a mission trip is a great way to see your faith grow.
1) Trust God to provide money.
2) You are serving those in need... obeying Scripture!
3) As you pour into others it makes you like a river instead of a swamp.
a swamp smells, has fungus... why? inlet but not outlet.
a river that has alot pouring into it and alot out... rushes clear and pure..
it has an inlet and outlet!

WE WILL HAVE A MISSION TRIP INTEREST SIGN UP FOR YOUR SMALL GROUP TIME...
please have everyone fill it out!

I will post a synopsis of the passage that you can listen.
Thanks

Week 4: Strategy For Sexual Purity

I BELIEVE THERE IS A COUPLE OF KEY PRINCIPLES IN THIS PASSAGE THAT WOULD HELP SOMEONE TO STAY PURE... I am not going to post them yet... I would prefer to see what everyone comes up with first. Meditate on the passage and post your comments!

1 Thessalonians 4 NIV
1Finally, brothers, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more. 2For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus.

3It is God's will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; 4that each of you should learn to control his own body[a] in a way that is holy and honorable, 5not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God; 6and that in this matter no one should wrong his brother or take advantage of him. The Lord will punish men for all such sins, as we have already told you and warned you. 7For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. 8Therefore, he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit.

9Now about brotherly love we do not need to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love each other. 10And in fact, you do love all the brothers throughout Macedonia. Yet we urge you, brothers, to do so more and more.

Week 3: Designer Sex versus Destructive Sex.

Designer Sex Vs. Destructive Sex
I Corinthians 6:12-20

cool illustration if you have a laptop or access to the internet from the location of the group >>>

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Olki4X-da4 (has a curse word at the end... will have to stop it or maybe we can edit.)

THIS LESSON IS TOTALLY QUESTION DRIVEN TO HELP YOU GET A GOOD DISCUSSION GOING. IF YOU HAVE OTHER QUESTIONS OR INSIGHTS... PLEASE POST ON THE COMMENTS.

Soon to be Attached is a more detailed outline (3 pages).. but it would be cool if you studied on your own and came up with answers first.

YOU WILL NOT HAVE TIME TO ASK ALL THESE QUESTIONS >>> MAKE SURE YOU CHOOSE AND HAVE ALL THREE TYPES OF QUESTIONS (1 icebreaker, observations, applicatiosn, prayer)
I like following the S.O.A.P. journalling strategy to help them start using it as they see it used in a group context)

ICEBREAKER QUESTION (everyone answers and choose just one)
1a -- What Classic TV Shows can you think of where the married couple slept in separate beds?
1b -- What married couple’s relationship do you admire most?
1c -- If someone were to pay you 1 million dollars to have sex with them would you do it? (have everyone answer that question then ask the following.) What if they told you that they had A.I.D.S., would you still do it?
1d -- what if whoever you thought was the most attractive super model in the world wanted to “fool around” with you (not necessarily go all the way)… would you do it? Wait for answers then ask… “What if she told you that she had HPV and you can catch it from skin to skin contact?”

OBSERVATION QUESTIONS
2) Read 1 Corinthians 6:12-20 (each one read a verse)

3) How many times is the word body in this passage? (can underline)

4) What different word is used to describe sex in the passage? What does this word show you about sex?

5) How many times is the word sex or unite included in the passage? (can underline)

6) What are some of the reasons given not to sin sexually? (try to let the youth come up with answers)

7) Highlight or underline the word “You.” How many times is it mentioned in the passage. How can understanding “Who You Are” as a believer help you not commit sexual sins.

8) Who does this passage say “You Are” (for the authentic believer)/

9) Do you think when it says “sexual sins” and “sexual immorality” the passage is just referring to sexual intercourse or other stuff?

APPLICATION QUESTIONS
10) How far do think is too far for you to go with someone you are not married to?
(have everyone answer)

11) Explain the progression of “flirting, holding hands, pop kissing, french kissing, touching, touching private places, undressing, sexual intercourse.
Ask them “where does physical interaction become “sexual sin.” (anyone disagree, why?)
Read Mat. 5:28. According to this passage, crossing what line becomes sin?

12) In this passage, what encourages you the most not to have sex outside of marriage?

13) Where will you draw the line with physical touch with someone you like, someone you are dating, with someone you are engaged with?

14) What steps can you take to make sure that you “Honor God” with your body now and even when you are older?

PRAYER TIME
1) Some of you have messed up out of ignorance and some intentionally. There is forgiveness that bring freedom from guilt, There is cleansing from shame and dirtyness. And there is restoration for brokenness. If anyone has already messed up, we can pray now together or one on one later.
2) If anyone is really struggling with peer pressure at school or major temptation by someone of the opposite sex, be courageous to come to the middle so we can pray for you as a group.
3) Our dream is that Soul Purpose would be a light to the thousands of Chicago students. If we are not living by God’s design, if we are not different, if we are not loving people God’s Way, we are messing up our testimony and opportunities for people to come to Christ. Let’s pray that “Everyone” at our group would be great example of purity (1 Tim 4:12)
4) Is there anyone you know at school that you can invite to the Purity banquet and/or parent teen seminar? Let’s pray that they would come. (everyone could come up with a name and go around the circle praying for those people by name.)

Week 2: Romance in the Bible

I will post a lesson shortly.

Week 1: Love Vs. Infatuation

The objective of this week is to show the difference between True Love and Infatuation. There will be more meat to come. The main passage is 1 Corinthians 13. Jeff Schmidt actually already came up with a great lesson contrasting the story in 2 Samuel 13 and 1 Corinthians 13. PLEASE POST YOUR SUGGESTIONS FOR SMALL GROUP QUESTIONS!!! especially ones that will help people apply the two passages to their lives.

NOW IN COMMENTS >>> JEFF SCHMIDTS VERSION OF THE LESSON with a great idea for an icebreaker and a great way to get the group involved!!!!

Intro to Love God's Way 2007

Hey incredible small group leaders! I am more excited than ever about teaching our youth about sexual purity. After several years of teaching youth about purity... I have a few new ideas that I think will help us do a better job than ever. I have created this blog to help get the lessons out to everyone in an effective manner. But more importantly, it will provide an opportunity for everyone to contribute by posting your ideas, small group discussion questions and more by posting comments. The more everyone contributes, the more each small group DISCUSSION FACILLITATOR will have to pull from. Again, let me remind you that the goal of someone leading a small group is to lead a DISCUSSION not preach a sermon or teach a lesson. So perhaps your greatest contribution is to help come up with effective "Open-Ended Questions." I have included an mp3 attachment about the difference between open ended questiosn and close ended questions the might help you become a better discussion leader. It is awesome when you see youth come up with truth and see it first for themselves and then talk about it. You will know they have learned something when they are actually talking about it and can explain it. Looking forward to awesome 6 weeks. May the Lord fill you with his Spirit and give you the supernatural ability to help you be set free by the truth!

With a Bible study the questions should lead members to DISCOVER TRUTH and DISCLOSE HOW TO APPLY that truth to their lives.

Download Leading a small group discussion mp3 for a 10 minute training on some examples and the importance of crafting good questions. (NIV).
